PATENT PENDING
One burnisher, any scraper. If you've ever struggled to turn a hook (or burr) on a scraper, or simply thought there might be a better way, Blackburn Tools and Union Manufacturing Company have made this tool for you. Meticulously designed in every detail to be the most versatile burnisher ever, the Accu-Burr™ is the first and only burnisher you'll need on your bench.
For centuries, the common burnisher has remained largely unchanged. A simple rod of hardened steel held in a handle, their use depended largely on the user's freehand skills. Some mounted that rod in a more sophisticated holder to guide the process, but these, too, had distinct disadvantages.
The heart of the Accu-Burr™ burnisher is a 3/16" diameter carbide rod with three v-shaped grooves around the middle of the rod. These grooves are precision ground to turn a fine, medium, or coarse (5°, 10°, or 15°, respectively) burr simultaneously on both sides of any prepared scraper edge. Because quality and precision matter greatly for the function of this tool, we use a premium American-made grade of carbide, sourced from and ground by Lakeshore Carbide, a leading carbide tooling manufacturer.
Advantages of the Accu-Burr™ burnisher include:
How to use: No burnisher gives better results with less effort. To turn a burr, hold your Accu-Burr™ carbide burnisher perpendicular to the prepared scraper edge and centered on either the fine, medium, or coarse groove (the deepest groove is for the coarse burr). Using a moderate downward force on the burnisher, draw it firmly and smoothly along the length of the prepared scraper edge (a drop of oil on the burnisher will make this action even smoother). This burnishing will raise a burr that can be barely felt with your finger; if no burr is felt, repeat as needed, but with increasing force, until a nearly imperceptible burr is formed along the entire length of the scraper.
Your Accu-Burr™ can also be used as a conventional burnisher by drawing the ungrooved portion of the rod along the scraper's edge.
Where to buy: While manufacturing of the Accu-Burr™ burnisher gets off the ground, kits will be available exclusively through these retailers:
A brass-handled version (the Jr) is now being sold. Kit parts include the Accu-Burr™ carbide rod, closed-end ferrules, and wood turning blanks for the handles. In the coming months, look for a wood-handled Accu-Burr™ carbide burnisher (in both single and double-handled versions).
