For those interested in learning and practicing woodworking as it was done in centuries past, or with a special piece of wood too large to run through your bandsaw, frame saws offer a viable method of resawing lumber and ripping planks. This hardware kit is patterned after the hardware described and illusrated by Roubo in the 18th century. Available in two sizes to fit a variety of blades and tasks.
All parts are made from steel, and are sized to withstand the considerable tension needed for these saws to function well. Ready to install, with the exception of the steel brackets, which have a small welded seam on the inside that should be filed down. This is a few minutes of work with a coarse file.
If you are looking for a Roubo frame saw blade by itself, those can be ordered separately. Or buy the complete kit (blade and hardware together) for a modest savings.
The small hardware kit includes:
- Two steel brackets; 4" x 1 1/2" (outside dimensions) x 2" long, with 1/8" walls.
- One heavy duty (lift rated) eye bolt (3/8-16 threads).
- One bearing plate (with two wood screws).
- Two keepers (for holding the blade in the brackets).
The large hardware kit includes:
- Two steel brackets; 5" x 2" (outside dimensions) x 2" long, with 3/16" walls.
- One heavy duty (lift rated) eye bolt (1/2-13 threads).
- One bearing plate (with two wood screws).
- Two keepers (for holding the blade in the brackets).

Lumber for wood frame: Wood is not included. Many species of wood will work, although woods with high bending strengths are preferred for the arms. I favor ash, but hickory, cherry, soft maple, poplar, and many others will work well. See the dimensioned templates for the hardware you are using (small or large) for the required dimensions of the wood stock.
